History of Agra |
The History of Agra is rich with a legacy that speaks of Mughals and an era that began long before the Mughals. With its proximity to the river Yamuna, Agra has been a favorite spot for the ancient settlers in India. The History of Agra claims that that the city was founded in the year 1504, by Sikander Lodi, the ruler of Delhi Sultanate. However, the Mughal era began in Agra with the invasion of the Mughals in India. The First Battle of Panipat saw the downfall of Ibrahim Lodi in the hands of Babar, the founder of the Mughal dynasty in India. When Akbar succeeded his father and became the Mughal emperor he named the city as Akbarabad.
The city of Agra reached its pinnacle of development during this time. Broad roads, better facilities and a taste for the aesthetic arts everything developed in Agra at around this time. The first authentic Persian garden was planned in Agra, close to the banks of river Yamuna. This garden constructed by Babar, is an integral part of the History of Agra. Today it is known as the Aram Bagh, or the garden of relaxation. Akbar too introduced a lot of positive changes in the city. Besides constructing a new town close to Agra, better known as the Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar also raised the Agra fort in the city.
However, none developed the city like Shahjahan. He not only made Akbarabad, his capital but also constructed the pristine monument of love , the Taj mahal, in the memory of his beloved wife, Mumtaj Mahal. Today the city is also known as the land of Taj Mahal. The History of Agra underwent a sea change after the fall of the Mughals. Marathas and Jats ruled the city for some time before the city of Agra finally came in the hands of British colonial power. It was the Marathas, who named the city as Agra.
