A tour of the Golden Triangle region of India, should not leave out the archaeological site of Mehtab Bagh, even if only from a distance. Agra is situated in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh is located in North India. Being a bustling tourist destination, the city of Agra is linked to most important cities in India.
Mehtab Bagh is located on a grassy flood plain on the river Yamuna. The flood plain is crescent shaped. On a moonlit night, this was the best place to look at the Taj Mahal.
Replete with white plaster pathways, fountains, pools, and pavilions, this garden was really fit for kings. In 1994, archaeological excavations unearthed the magnificent pleasure garden, Mehtab Bagh, that had been ruined by centuries of human settlements, and floods. Efforts are on by the Archaeological Survey Of India (ASI) to restore Mehtab Bagh, to its past grandeur.
However, the discovery of Mehtab Bagh, has laid to rest all theories about Shah Jehan's plans to built a black Taj Mahal. Archaeologists have discovered that Mehtab Bagh was a typical 'charbagh' (four-quartered) garden. This garden is perfectly positioned within the Taj Mahal complex. Sadly, this site is not accessible to tourists. Located on the north-west water front, the area can be reached by auto rickshaws, or taxis.
